Job Purpose

The Design Engineering Project Manager will lead the design, planning, and execution of complex engineering projects within the distribution network. This role requires a blend of technical design expertise, project management skills, and leadership ability to deliver projects on time, within scope, and to a high standard of safety and quality. The ideal candidate will have experience in the energy or utilities sector, specifically within distribution networks, and possess a solid understanding of engineering design principles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Management:
    Lead and manage multi-disciplinary engineering projects from inception to completion. Ensure project objectives are met, including scope, time, cost, and quality.

  • Engineering Design Oversight:
    Collaborate with design teams to ensure robust engineering solutions that meet regulatory, safety, and technical standards. Provide guidance on electrical network design, upgrades, and extensions.

  • Stakeholder Management:
    Liaise with internal stakeholders (operations, maintenance, finance) and external partners (contractors, suppliers, regulators) to ensure seamless project execution. Attend project meetings and provide regular status updates.

  • Risk Management:
    Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with design, construction, and operation of network projects. Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations and environmental standards.

  • Budget Management:
    Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring that financial objectives are met. Prepare cost estimates and monitor project financial performance.

  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Ensure all designs and projects comply with industry regulations, including Ofgem standards, safety rules, and environmental guidelines. Stay updated on changes in the regulatory landscape.

  • Team Leadership:
    Lead and mentor project teams, fostering a collaborative and solution-driven work environment. Encourage innovation and continuous improvement in design and engineering processes.

Key Skills and Experience
  • Education:
    Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline. A Masters degree is desirable.

  • Professional Qualifications:
    Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it is preferred. Membership of a relevant professional body such as the IET or ICE is desirable.

  • Experience:
    Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering design within the utilities or energy sector, with a focus on distribution networks. Proven track record of successfully managing large-scale engineering projects.

  • Project Management Skills:
    Strong project management capabilities, ideally with a recognised qualification (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP, or APM). Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

  • Technical Expertise:
    In-depth understanding of electrical power systems, network planning, and design principles. Familiarity with DNO operations, including protection systems, substations, overhead lines, and underground cables.

  • Regulatory Knowledge:
    Familiarity with UK regulatory frameworks for distribution networks, including Ofgem standards and safety requirements.

  • Communication Skills:
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to produce clear and concise reports, technical specifications, and presentations.

  • Problem-Solving:
    Proactive approach to problem-solving with the ability to find creative solutions to complex engineering challenges.

  • IT Skills:
    Proficiency in project management tools and design software (e.g., AutoCAD, PowerFactory, GIS). Competency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Desirable Attributes
  • Experience in sustainable energy projects, such as integrating renewable energy sources into the distribution network.
  • Strong knowledge of HV and LV electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with the connection of distributed generation (solar, wind) to the network.
