Responsibilities of the Optical Engineer:

  • Plan and Develop Optical Systems: Lead the planning, development, and deployment of state-of-the-art optical systems.
  • Provide Technical Leadership: Take charge of project planning and execution, ensuring technical excellence.
  • Collaborate with Experts: Contribute to larger projects and engage with a team of subject matter experts.
  • Conduct Technical Tasks: Involve yourself in HEL development, testing, and evaluation processes.
  • Engage Stakeholders: Collaborate with diverse stakeholders from various backgrounds.
  • Field Trials: Be prepared for travel to trial sites across the UK to ensure successful project execution.

Essential Qualification and Experience of the Optical Engineer:

  • Educational Background: A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Understanding of Optical Fibres: Strong knowledge of optical fibres and their components.
  • Hands-On Experience: Practical skills in designing, developing, and assembling optical fibre systems.
  • Expertise in Laser and Optical Physics: A robust understanding of laser and optical physics principles.
  • Laboratory Proficiency: Experience with test and measurement equipment in laboratory settings.
  • Awareness of Laser Safety: Comprehensive understanding of laser safety practices and standards.
  • Project Management Skills: Experience in project planning and effective stakeholder engagement.

While not mandatory, the following is desirable:

  • Fibre Splicing: Experience with splicing various types of optical fibres.
  • Optical Material Knowledge: Understanding of factors influencing the choice and design of optical materials.
  • Software Proficiency: Familiarity with Matlab, LabVIEW, and other relevant software packages.
  • Trial Planning: Experience in planning and conducting trial activities.
  • High Power Laser Knowledge: Understanding of kW-level laser optics, including fibre lasers and beam quality management.
  • Optical Design Tools: Proficiency in using optical design software such as Zemax and related 3D engineering tools.
  • Systems Engineering Awareness: Familiarity with systems engineering practices and principles.
