School Caretaker

We are looking for a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to join our team and ensure the smooth running of our school premises. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong practical skills and a commitment to maintaining high standards of site management.

• Ensure the school premises, grounds, and facilities are well-maintained, safe, and secure.

• Open and close the school daily, including alarm setting and checking security systems.

• Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance tasks (e.g., plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and painting).

• Conduct routine site inspections and report any major maintenance issues to management.

• Ensure the site is clean and presentable, liaising with cleaning staff as necessary.

• Monitor and oversee external contractors working on-site.

• Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, conducting regular checks on fire alarms, emergency lighting, and other safety equipment.

• Carry out risk assessments and implement necessary safety measures.

• Maintain records of maintenance, safety checks, and compliance reports.

• Respond promptly to any emergencies or maintenance requests.

• Assist with setting up classrooms, halls, and other spaces for events, assemblies, and exams.

• Manage stock levels of cleaning and maintenance supplies, ordering replacements when necessary.

• Support staff with moving furniture or heavy items when required.

• Monitor heating, lighting, and ventilation systems to ensure efficient operation.

• Maintain outdoor spaces, including playgrounds, pathways, and car parks.

• Previous experience in a caretaking, facilities management, or maintenance role.

• Strong DIY skills, including basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical work.

• A good understanding of health and safety regulations.

• Ability to work independently and take initiative in problem-solving.

• Reliable, punctual, and proactive with excellent attention to detail.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise with staff, contractors, and external agencies.

• A willingness to undergo relevant training, including safeguarding and first aid.

• Experience working in a school or educational environment.

• Knowledge of COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations.

• A valid DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check or willingness to obtain one.
