Our client, a leading player in the aerospace sector, is currently seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Optical Systems Functional Manager to join their team. This permanent role offers a unique blend of technical, managerial, and strategic responsibilities, focusing on delivering current and future optical payloads within the aerospace industry.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Line management of Optical Systems engineers including recruitment, performance, development, mentoring, and wellbeing
  • Ensure clear understanding of necessary skillsets and resource requirements for current and future project delivery
  • Manage team workload using resource planning tools and resolve potential resource clashes
  • Ensure adherence to engineering processes and guidelines in design, build, and test phases
  • Mentor and support team members to enhance technical capabilities and quality of work
  • Measure and improve the effectiveness of engineering processes and practices
  • Develop strategic roadmaps for Optical Payload products in alignment with company strategy
  • Support bid and tender activities by collaborating with Sales and Engineering teams
  • Maintain technical standards through peer reviews and consistent monitoring
  • Build relationships with Project Managers, Heads of Engineering, and other department Managers


Job Requirements:

  • Degree in Physics or Engineering, or equivalent qualification
  • Proven track record in Optical engineering, particularly in space optical instruments
  • Experience with optical instrumentation such as telescopes, spectrometers, and focal plane assemblies
  • Excellent people management skills and ability to motivate a team
  • Strong team player with collaborative working skills across sub-systems
  • Strategic thinking abilities with flexibility to adapt to changing project needs
  • Proficient in MS Office and knowledge of Microsoft Project
  • Clear communication and influencing skills
  • Well-organised with strong project and time management skills
  • Ability to delegate and empower team members
  • Pro-active and flexible with a results-focused attitude
