As part of our ongoing development, we are looking for a passionate and experienced Lead Teacher of English to join our dedicated team and lead the delivery of high-quality English education.

The Role:As Lead Teacher of English, you will take a strategic lead in delivering and developing the English curriculum across the school, ensuring that it is tailored to the needs of students with SEMH and a range of learning abilities. You will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to drive improvement in teaching and learning, mentor and support a team of English teachers, and take an active role in raising standards across the school.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced teacher with a passion for English and a desire to make a real difference in the lives of young people who face additional challenges. The role comes with a TLR (Teaching and Learning Responsibility) to reflect the leadership responsibilities associated with the position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the English department, including planning, delivery, and assessment of the curriculum.
  • Develop and implement strategies to raise achievement and improve student outcomes in English.
  • Provide leadership and support to English teachers, including mentoring, training, and performance management.
  • Work closely with the SENCO and other colleagues to ensure an inclusive approach to teaching and learning.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of English teaching across the school, implementing improvements where necessary.
  • Support students with SEMH needs by using creative and differentiated approaches to engage and motivate them in English lessons.
  • Develop and review English curriculum content to ensure it is accessible, relevant, and engaging for students with varying abilities and needs.
  • Participate in whole-school initiatives and contribute to the wider development of the school.
  • Foster a positive and supportive environment for students, promoting their emotional well-being and academic progress.
  • Ensure the English department's resources are effectively managed and accessible.

About You:

  • A qualified teacher with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a proven track record in teaching English at secondary level.
  • Experience in leading or managing a department or team is desirable, but not essential.
  • A passion for English and a commitment to making it accessible for all students, particularly those with SEMH and additional learning needs.
  • Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet individual needs.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • A deep understanding of curriculum design and the ability to implement strategies that raise achievement.
  • Empathy, patience, and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Experience or an interest in working in a SEMH setting would be beneficial but not essential.
