Counsellor / Wellbeing Officer

We are seeking a dedicated Counsellor / Wellbeing Officer to join a primary school in Hailsham, who will primarily work as a Teaching Assistant, with a special focus on providing mental health and emotional wellbeing support to students. This unique role allows you to combine classroom support with providing essential guidance to students facing emotional or mental health challenges.

As a Counsellor / Wellbeing Officer, you will support the teaching staff in day-to-day classroom activities while also working closely with students to address their emotional and mental wellbeing. Your support will enable students to thrive in both their academic and personal lives by offering a safe and supportive environment to express themselves.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide classroom support to the teacher, assisting with daily teaching tasks and promoting an inclusive learning environment.
  • Offer emotional and mental health support to students, helping them manage stress, anxiety, and social challenges.
  • Support students one-on-one or in small groups with personal wellbeing strategies, promoting self-esteem and emotional regulation.
  • Create and maintain confidential records of students' wellbeing needs and progress, ensuring appropriate follow-up support.
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to create a holistic support plan for students requiring emotional or mental health assistance.

What We're Looking For:

  • A compassionate individual with experience in supporting students or children in an educational or wellbeing capacity.
  • Knowledge or training in mental health, counselling, or emotional wellbeing (experience working in schools is a plus).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting, positive relationships with students.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team, supporting both classroom learning and students' personal development.
  • Patience, empathy, and an understanding of the challenges students may face, along with a proactive approach to providing support.
