Interim Deputy Headteacher Role - January Start

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced educational leader to join a high-performing secondary school in Harrogate as an Interim Deputy Headteacher. This vital role is available for one term, starting in January 2024, and will focus on maintaining stability and excellence while the school transitions to a permanent appointment for Easter.

Role Overview

As Interim Deputy Headteacher, you will play a pivotal role in the strategic leadership of the school. Reporting directly to the Headteacher, your responsibilities will include overseeing pastoral care, behaviour, and acting as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). You will lead and manage a team of Assistant Headteachers, ensuring the smooth running of the school during this interim period.

While the role is designed around pastoral and safeguarding responsibilities, the school is open to considering alternative leadership strengths for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership: Provide strategic oversight of pastoral care, behaviour, and safeguarding across the school.
  • Safeguarding: Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), ensuring the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection.
  • Behaviour Management: Oversee and enhance the school's behaviour and attendance policies, fostering a positive and inclusive culture.
  • Team Management: Lead and support a team of Assistant Headteachers, ensuring clarity of roles and effective delegation of responsibilities.
  • Support to Headteacher: Collaborate closely with the Headteacher to drive the school's vision and respond to emerging challenges effectively.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a key point of contact for students, staff, parents, and external agencies, ensuring transparent and professional communication.
  • Interim Transition: Provide stability and continuity, preparing for a seamless handover to the permanent Deputy Headteacher.
Person Specification

The successful candidate will:

  • Have substantial experience in a senior leadership role, ideally as a Deputy Headteacher or Assistant Headteacher.
  • Possess a strong background in pastoral care and safeguarding, with an up-to-date understanding of statutory requirements (DSL experience preferred).
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Exhibit a clear understanding of behaviour management strategies and their implementation within a secondary school context.
  • Be adaptable, solution-focused, and able to thrive in a dynamic school environment.
  • Bring exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to engage effectively with students, staff, and parents.
