Lead Mechanical Engineer- Cryogenic Tanks – £60 to £80,000k PA – Harwich, UK

The Role

Our client, a leading advanced materials start-up specialising in hydrogen storage solutions, is seeking a highly motivated Lead Mechanical Engineer. You will play a pivotal role in the development, commissioning, and operation of a testing facility for a fully integrated hydrogen high pressure, low temperature tank system.

Note: The post is available on a salaried 1-year fixed term contract.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the delivery of carbon composite tank systems and associated plant.
  • Lead projects funded by UK government grants, ensuring milestones are met.
  • Liaise with contractors for feasibility studies, design, construction, and commissioning of hydrogen storage systems.
  • Provide technical leadership from planning to delivery, managing engineering consultants and contractors.
  • Review design specifications, drawings, and documentation for tank fabrication and installation.
  • Oversee risk assessments and safety reviews to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Ensure timely project reporting to management and project partners, supporting project planning and tracking.

The Person

Degree:

  • At least a BSc in Mechanical Engineering.

Experience:

  • Significant experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in high pressure/high bar cryogenic vessel design, manufacturing, inspection, and maintenance.
  • Proven project management skills, including engaging with contractors and ensuring projects are on time and within budget.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards for tank design, construction, maintenance, and inspection.
  • Experience with carbon composite tanks and specialised plant design and commissioning.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency with relevant software.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving abilities and a focus on safety protocols, including HAZOP.
