Mechanical Maintenance Engineer Job Overview

My client are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join their maintenance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of hydraulic systems, PLC-controlled machinery, and other mechanical equipment. This role requires strong diagnostic skills and the ability to perform planned preventive maintenance (PPM) to minimize downtime and ensure operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine and reactive maintenance on hydraulic systems and PLC-controlled equipment.
  • Perform fault finding and diagnostics on mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Implement and follow Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) schedules.
  • Carry out mechanical repairs, replacements, and upgrades to machinery.
  • Read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics and technical drawings.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company maintenance standards.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to increase equipment reliability and efficiency.
  • Provide support for machinery installations, commissioning, and modifications.
  • Supervision and training of two maintenance engineers.
Mechanical Maintenance Engineer Job Requirements
  • HNC/HND, or apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., hydraulics, PLC programming, or mechanical maintenance) are an advantage.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or production environment.
  • Proven experience in mechanical maintenance and fault finding.
  • Good understanding of hydraulic systems.
  • Experience working with PLC-controlled machinery
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
  • Use of CAD software to create and modify technical drawings
  • Familiarity with PPM strategies and maintenance best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with welding and fabrication (desirable but not essential).
  • Understanding of health & safety regulations in an industrial setting.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work within a team.
Maintenance Engineer Salary & Benefits
  • £35,000- £45,000 DOE
  • Pension scheme - employer contribution 5% of salary
  • Holidays 28 days, plus an additional day of holiday per year of service up 3 years, additional 5 days after 4 years' service, additional 7 days after 5 years' service.
