Talent84 is delighted to be representing our client, a highly successful, market-leading international FMCG manufacturer based in Northumberland in their search for a Civil Engineer - Projects & Services.

About the Role

The Civil Engineer will be responsible for the undertaking and management of civil engineering projects as required, including the regular maintenance of the factory, office, roads, drains, services and other buildings across theirlarge-scale site.


Main Responsibilities

  • To plan and lead/assist in designated civil engineering projects ensuring completion within allocated timescales and budget, including preparation and monitoring of estimates and costs. The projects must also meet the required standard, to comply with the UK legislation.
  • To plan, install and commission any new equipment and to conduct/lead price and contract negotiations with suppliers in cooperation with the technical purchasing department. To also obtain competitive prices regarding the hiring of equipment/labour needed during project work. To ensure contractors meet with Company standards in terms of safety arrangements, quality and environmental matters.
  • To provide recommendations increasing plant efficiency and cost effectiveness, by working closely with the engineering departments (Electrical/Mechanical) on specific areas and projects.
  • To ensure the work place is kept in a clean and tidy condition, acting as the first line of contact for repairs and maintenance work on site, alongside arranging and monitoring the work, in relation to quality, cost and safety. To also manage all work in line with laid down safety regulations and procedures and communicate with interested parties of progress e.g. Heads of Department.
  • To act as main contact to external service providers, such as Building/Maintenance/ Engineering contractors and Industrial Cleaners. To manage contract labour engaged in the project and services section.
  • To act as client or principle contractor as required under HSE (CDM) regulations and to observe health and safety requirements at all times. Including the management of the selection of external contractors in terms of their safety procedures and records in conjunction with the Safety Department.
  • To monitor impact of forthcoming developments in terms of changes in safety matters and operational processes and advise Management accordingly.
  • To monitor and schedule for regular maintenance requirements/relevant tests to be carried out and advise accordingly.
  • To assist in planning and alterations to the buildings on site. To communicate and liaise with relevant authorities regarding planning permissions if and when required, as well as attending meetings with local residents if and when required.
  • Ensuring DWG are up to date and correct, including by liaising with CAD operator(s) if required. Ensure a CAD archive is used for historical information.
  • To communicate and co-operate, where required, with the other Group personnel
  • To attend training courses and meetings as necessary.
  • To provide out of hours support if required.
  • To demonstrate professional competence and development by keeping skills up to date and in providing evidence of continuing professional development.

About you

To be considered for the role, it is essential that you possess demonstrable experience gained in Civil Engineering, ideally working on large-scale projects on manufacturing/engineering sites.

Main Responsibilities

  • An ONC/HNC/HND/degree or equivalent in engineering/civil engineering/building.
  • Supervisory and Management qualifications/ practical experience essential.
  • Knowledge of Site Health and Safety Rules and CIEH Supervising Health and Safety certificate.
  • Intermediate standard of IT skills and competent use of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to use AutoCAD advantageous but not essential.
  • An SMSTS or CSCS qualification is desirable.
  • Good written and verbal skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are important.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant SAP module.
