We have a fantastic opportunity for a Street Service Operative / Gardener at Rochdale Council, this is a full-time Temporary role for the next 2 -3 months with the possibility of extension.

What is the role?

Rochdale Council are looking for a Street Service Operative, to provide a Streets Maintenance Service including the collection of all litter, that falls within the definitions used in Environmental Protection Act 1990 from the street scene environment by manual methods and use of mechanical sweepers. Also to undertake horticultural operations to maintain all open spaces in a clean and tidy condition using pedestrian and ride-on mowing machines for grass cutting. Using craft skills to undertake horticultural operations which will include turf management operations, preparation and maintenance of bedding displays and the care of trees, shrubs and plants.

What are your responsibilities?

  • To undertake litter removal by a combination of manual/mechanical means including removal of dog fouling, emptying of litter/dog fouling bins.
  • Report any obstruction / problem which prevents allocated tasks being undertaken.
  • Cut grass plots within the street scene environment by the use of pedestrian and ride on mowers, strimmer’s and other ancillary equipment.
  • To undertake manual weeding of flower and shrub beds as directed.
  • Act as an environmental steward in identifying and reporting to your supervisor any issue within the street scene environment that requires attention such as graffiti and vandalism.
  • Ensure that all tasks are carried out in accordance with Corporate and Service Policies and report any incidents that may cause potential harm or injury.
  • Assist the public when/where possible in a courteous and helpful manner and to act as stewards for events and activities within the service.
  • Undertake snow clearing and salting of pathways along with the cleaning of signs, benches and features during inclement weather. The cleaning of drains, gullies and water courses, including ponds and lakes.

What skills do you Need?

  • Must have recent experience of working as a Street Service Operative / Gardener or Street Cleaner
  • Must be physically fit and healthy, as you will be working outside and may need to lift heavy items.
  • Excellent people skills, as you will be speaking to the public, other members of staff and managers.
  • Full UK Driving Licence, with HGV Class 2 Licence would be desirable
  • Must have previous experience using gardening tools / machines, such as a Lawnmower and Strimmer
  • Valid Standard DBS on the update service
