Role purpose:
- The purpose of the role as a Library Assistant is to work as part of a team to deliver high quality, front-line services to residents and users of the Library Service in a designated Council Library or specialist area e.g. Prison, Schools' Library Service, Library at Home or Archives and Local Studies.
- You will need to assist in the provision of information and help customers of the Library or specialist area as appropriate.
- Library at Home: provide a responsive and personal service to housebound and vulnerable customers referred to the service;
- Schools' Library Service: provide a comprehensive service to schools and other educational settings in the borough, and outside where establishments buy in the SLS;
- Archives and Local Studies: support the service in archiving, documenting, preserving and promoting the history of the Borough;
- Prison Service: provide a service to Feltham YOI in line with specifications.
Duties:
- Ensure the best possible visitor experience by welcoming and greeting everyone who enters the service point and acting as the first point of contact for customer enquiries in person, by phone, email or letter.
- Offer advice and guidance to customers on the use of library materials and equipment including public-use IT; reference and stock enquiries as well as general council enquiries.
- Operate the self-issuing/discharge system, issue and discharge of stock at the Helpdesk, and register new members.
- Participate in the delivery of activities for children and adults in line with the service Events and Engagement Plan including making bookings for and promoting functions/events.
- Take a positive role in promoting Library Services and stock and ensure the library is well-presented and tidy at all times, with a high standard of display and promotional materials.
- Carry out cash-handling and banking duties as assigned and comply at all times with the Council's cash-handling procedures.
- Open and close libraries as directed, ensuring buildings are secure.
- Use the Council's file sharing facilities and Microsoft Office suite as directed to view documents and spreadsheets.
- Participate in training and development activities and programmes, and attend and participate in meetings as required.
- Support the monitoring and evaluation of service delivery to ensure that targets and standards are being achieved.
- Comply with Council and statutory health and safety procedures.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post including key holding as required, lunch cover and providing cover during absences of other staff.
