Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Functional Skills Tutor, you will:

Deliver Tailored Lessons: Plan and teach functional skills in English, mathematics, and ICT, ensuring lessons are accessible, engaging, and relevant to each pupil’s needs and abilities.

Promote Life Skills: Help students develop the practical skills necessary for everyday life, further education, and the workplace.

Support Individual Progress: Adapt teaching methods and resources to address the diverse needs of pupils, including those with autism, learning difficulties, and SEMH challenges.

Monitor and Assess Performance: Track and record student progress, providing regular feedback to pupils, parents, and the wider team.

Collaborate with Staff: Work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to deliver cohesive, multidisciplinary support.

Implement Behaviour Management Strategies: Use positive reinforcement and other techniques to foster engagement and self-regulation.

Prepare Students for Accreditation: Support pupils in working towards functional skills qualifications and other appropriate accreditations.
To excel in this role, you will need:

A relevant teaching qualification, such as PGCE, Cert Ed, or Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).

Experience teaching functional skills in English, mathematics, and ICT, ideally within an SEN or alternative education setting.

Knowledge of the functional skills curriculum and its application to a special needs context.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.

Empathy, patience, and resilience to support students through challenges and celebrate their successes.

The ability to use a variety of teaching methods and resources to accommodate different learning styles.
