About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Design Manager to join a major rail contractor in a newly created role, overseeing geotechnical and structural projects across the Eastern, Northwest, Central, and Anglia regions. This role is pivotal in the design, development, and coordination of key projects, including bridges, retaining walls, and some tunnelling works.

As Principal Designer and Contractors Engineering Manager, you will lead and inspire design management teams while playing a crucial part in shaping the future of our consultancy services. Additionally, you will develop the strategy for establishing a medium-term in-house consultancy, contributing to the company's continued growth and success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as Principal Designer and Contractors Engineering Manager, leading the design and development of geotechnical and structural projects.
  • Oversee and coordinate design management teams across multiple regions, ensuring high-quality, timely delivery of projects.
  • Provide strategic leadership and develop the framework for a medium-term in-house consultancy service, contributing to future business growth.
  • Manage and deliver design solutions for projects, focusing on bridges, retaining walls, and tunnelling works, ensuring compliance with all relevant industry standards.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary teams, including project managers, engineers, and external stakeholders, to ensure effective communication and smooth project delivery.
  • Review and approve design submissions, offering expert technical advice and ensuring that design solutions are both innovative and cost-effective.
  • Maintain close liaison with clients and regulatory bodies, ensuring all designs meet Network Rail standards and requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and mentoring of junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.

Requirements:

  • Rail experience is essential for this role.
  • Proven experience in leading the design and management of geotechnical and structural projects, ideally within the rail industry.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
