Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Team Leader to oversee and manage the daily operations of our mechanical waste treatment process. The successful candidate will lead a team of operators, ensuring efficient waste processing, equipment maintenance, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The Team Leader will play a pivotal role in optimising process efficiency and contributing to our organisation’s sustainability and environmental goals.

  • Oversee the mechanical waste treatment process, ensuring smooth and efficient operations of sorting, shredding, segregation, and other fractional output from waste processing.
  • Ensure that all processes comply with environmental regulations and company health and safety standards. Promote a culture of safety by conducting & contributing to the regular review and updating of risk assessments and method statement, to participate in the monthly H&S meetings on site
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor a team of operators and support staff alongside the site manager to conduct regular performance reviews and ensure staff are trained on equipment and safety procedures prior to work activities being carried out.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance process efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve material recovery and recycling rates.
  • Work with the Head of Operations to coordinate with our external maintenance team to ensure all mechanical equipment is operating efficiently and that preventative maintenance schedules are followed.
  • Monitor the quality of output materials, ensuring proper waste segregation, contamination control, and adherence to recycling standards, maximising commercial value form this.
  • Working in unison with the Plant Manager, track key performance indicators (KPIs) (To be set by HOO) related to throughput, equipment performance, material recovery, financial performance and downtime. Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Quickly address and resolve any operational issues, mechanical breakdowns, or process disruptions. Implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Work closely with other departments, such as environmental compliance, logistics, and Management, to ensure aligned operations and process improvements.

Desired Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience in leading or managing a mechanical process or machinery 
  • Experience in mechanical waste treatment, recycling, or related industry, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanical waste treatment technologies, including conveyors, shredders, magnetic separators, and other waste processing equipment.
  • Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and develop a team in a fast-paced, industrial environment.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems and optimise process performance.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with team members, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Safety Conscious: In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and procedures in industrial environments.
