BSL SEND Teaching Assistant Job Description

We are looking for a dedicated Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Teaching Assistant with proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) to join our team at a Primary School in Hackney. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children with SEND, including Autism and behavioural challenges. This role focuses on supporting pupils' academic, social, and emotional development using British Sign Language as a key communication tool.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide nurturing support to help pupils develop lifelong, transferable skills.
• Offer one-to-one and small group assistance to meet individual learning needs.
• Build strong relationships with parents and monitor pupil progress.
• Support pupils' emotional and social development in a caring and positive environment.
• Foster an inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere.

Ideal Candidate:

• Experience working with SEND pupils, particularly those with Autism and behavioural challenges.
• Strong behaviour management skills.
• Proficient in British Sign Language (BSL) with prior experience using it in educational settings.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and knowledge of SEND best practices.
• Passionate about supporting students' academic and emotional growth.
• A team player with the ability to collaborate effectively to ensure pupils holistic development.

About the Role:

SEND Teaching Assistants should have a positive attitude towards pupils and aid them in achieving success and excelling in the classroom. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate assertiveness and good behaviour management with sufficient use of BSL as well as a passion in supporting SEND pupils Candidates ideally should have some previous experience in working with SEND pupils. Candidates should also be able to provide support to pupils of varying abilities.
