Job Role

The Bird Hang Operative will be responsible for hanging birds (Chickens) onto shackles as they exit the gas pit in a safe manner in line with Bird Welfare regulations and to correct efficiency standards. You will ensure stunned birds have their heads removed/cut off to allow them to bleed out and ensure correct level of hygiene in Dolavs and trailers are maintained to minimise the risk of contamination.

Duties and Responsibilities

Hang On

  • Making sure you are on the line before kill is to start wearing the correct PPE & ready to hang on
  • Hanging chickens on to the shackles on the line at the correct rate (> 98% target)
  • When offline and at end of shift assisting in cleaning the area

Neck cut

  • Making sure at start-up the knife steriliser is in working conditions and filled in
  • Inspecting the neck cutter blade regularly for any signs of damage and wear
  • Ensuring the proper neck cut of all stunned birds
  • Cleaning the blood tanks of excessive blood

Trailer Wash

  • Removing as much gross debris into a cat 2 Dolav while the trailer is on the dirty side of the lairage
  • When the trailer is empty & moved into the wash area, rinsing, washing & sanitising

To ensure maximum efficiencies within the operation, flexibility is essential. You will be required to assist in other areas which could include other departments within the business.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience of working in a similar role
  • Aware and understand the importance of Health and Safety and animal welfare regulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, self-motivated and ability to work on own initiative
  • Comfortable handling birds
  • Comfortable working with live animals and in an unclean environment (blood / feathers)
  • Flexible and able to work additional hours when required

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience of working in a similar role
  • Previous experience of working within poultry / meat industry
