Job Purpose:

A global telecommunication provider is seeking a dynamic and experienced Communications Capability Manager to define and deliver their Communication Network Strategy. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, and resilience of both Corporate and Operational Technology (OT) networks, aligned with business needs. Leading a team of three network professionals, you will help design, implement, and support communication networks while providing technical assurance for products and services delivered by third-party providers.

Principal Accountabilities:

Team Leadership and Management:

    • Provide direct leadership and development to a team of three network engineers.
    • Manage the planning, allocation, and execution of tasks to ensure optimal team performance and project delivery.
    • Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement.

UKPN Communications Network Strategy:

    • Develop and implement a comprehensive network strategy that meets current and future business needs, ensuring cost-effectiveness, scalability, and adherence to security standards.

Network Policies and Procedures:

    • Develop and enforce network policies and procedures in line with the client's Communications Network Strategy.

Technology Evaluation and Thought Leadership:

    • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide thought leadership within the communications network domain.

Workplace Culture:

    • Promote an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative workplace culture.

Budget Management:

    • Manage the network infrastructure budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and ROI.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:

    • Act as the primary point of contact for communication networks, effectively conveying strategies to stakeholders and managing relationships with third-party suppliers.

Project Management:

    • Lead infrastructure projects from initiation to completion, managing timelines, budgets, and vendor contracts.

Compliance and Security:

    • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations and maintain robust security and disaster recovery protocols.

Nature and Scope:Reporting to the Head of Technology, you will work closely with other key managers to ensure that the client network infrastructure is robust, secure, and aligned with the company's strategic objectives. You will be responsible for a large on-premises network infrastructure estate, supporting thousands of users across multiple sites. Your leadership will be critical in driving the team's vision to operate the best utility-owned communications network in the UK, supporting both operational needs and the journey towards net zero.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:

  • Education:Degree in IT, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Technical Proficiency:Extensive knowledge of communications networking, including:
    • Telecommunications, DWDM, Optical Transport Networks, SDH
    • IP Network Design, LAN, and WAN technologies
    • Familiarity with on-premises and cloud technologies
  • Leadership:Proven experience in managing technical teams and projects with the ability to inspire and lead.
  • Communication:Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex strategies to non-technical audiences.
  • Strategic Thinking:Ability to develop strategic infrastructure plans aligned with business goals.
  • Problem-Solving:Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to potential challenges.
  • Budget Management:Experience in managing budgets and resource allocation for maximum efficiency.
  • Regulatory Knowledge:Understanding of OT infrastructure regulations, with a focus on compliance and cyber security.
