About the role:
As an Automotive Mechanic, you will be integral to maintaining the safety and efficiency of a variety of vehicles, including combustion-powered automotive vehicles and over-the-road trucks. Your role involves troubleshooting, repairing, and overhauling complex components and systems while providing exceptional customer service and guidance to patrons of the Auto Hobby Shop. Your expertise will ensure that all vehicles comply with the highest safety standards, directly supporting the overall mission of the base. A pre-employment physical will be required for this position, this will be completed at RAF Lakenheath.
Your hours of work will be 39 hours per week on a rostered schedule (this will be working every/any 5 days out of 7) where start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with the organization’s flexible working policies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and overhaul complex systems such as engines, transmissions, and axle assemblies, ensuring adherence to manufacturer specifications and safety regulations.
- Conduct Class IV Ministry of Transport vehicle inspections, ensuring compliance with laid-down procedures.Â
- Provide hands-on assistance and instruction to patrons, guiding them through various automotive repair projects with professionalism and expertise.Â
- Determine stock requirements for the retail outlet, manage merchandise, and provide cost estimates to customers.Â
- Operate the vehicle recovery truck for emergency road service, towing, and recovery tasks as needed.Â
About you:
To excel in this role, you should have proven experience as an automotive mechanic, along with extensive knowledge of vehicle repair and maintenance practices. A current DVSA Class IV Vehicle Inspector certification is essential, and strong troubleshooting skills are necessary to diagnose malfunctions using diagnostic tools. Excellent interpersonal skills and a passion for teaching others will help you thrive in this position. A valid driver’s licence (Cat B) and the ability to maintain security clearance are required, as well as a proactive approach to safety, adhering to regulations and procedures. NII (National Institute of Inspection) Level 2 MOT Testing Award together with an IMI, City & Guilds, BTEC or other in Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Automotive, Maintenance and Repair or others.
