SEMH Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a SEMH Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a Year 6 pupil with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The child, who has an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP), is in care and has attachment needs. He can become dysregulated quickly. He spends most of the day outside the classroom, engaging in nurture-based activities and structured learning.

This role requires a patient and skilled practitioner who can build trust, implement emotional regulation strategies, and support both academic and social development.

What We Are Looking For:

Experience:

  • Supporting children with SEMH, attachment difficulties, and behavioural needs.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of SEMH needs, trauma-informed approaches, and emotion coaching techniques.
  • Ability to de-escalate challenging behaviours and provide structured support to promote self-regulation.
  • Experience working with looked-after children (LAC) and an understanding of attachment difficulties.
  • Knowledge of nurture-based approaches and strategies to support engagement in learning.
  • Ability to work flexibly in different environments, supporting learning both inside and outside the classroom.

Qualifications:

  • Level 2 or 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (or equivalent) is desirable but not essential.
Role Responsibilities:
  • Provide 1:1 support, helping the pupil manage emotions and develop resilience.
  • Deliver nurture activities and tailored learning support to meet the child's individual needs.
  • Use emotion coaching techniques to help the pupil recognise and regulate their feelings.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and external professionals to implement EHCP strategies.
  • Support social interactions and encourage positive relationships with peers.
  • Adapt learning activities to support the child's academic progress and emotional wellbeing.
