Principal Structural Engineer

Permanent - 48,000 - 50,000 (depending on level of experience)

My client is looking for an experienced Structural engineer looking to join a rapidly expanding consultancy.


Position Objective:

Provide innovative civil and structural engineering designs for rail and power projects, emphasising sustainability, efficiency, and budget adherence, while exceeding stakeholder expectations.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative, sustainable, and safe structural solutions for rail and power projects, tailored to project needs.
  • Supervise junior engineers, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality project documentation and managing workflow.
  • Coordinate design efforts with team members and maintain structural stability throughout project phases.
  • Conduct regular project reviews, verify designs, and prioritize Health & Safety.
  • Document errors, maintain risk register, and provide detailed risk annotations to contractors.
  • Conduct site investigations and uphold document presentation standards.
  • Act as deputy for the line manager when necessary.
  • Prepare competitive bids, monitor scope changes, and ensure accurate invoicing.
  • Cultivate professional relationships, promote the company, and represent it at trade shows.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and team members, attend meetings, and document discussions.
  • Share expertise with the team, stay updated on industry developments, and fulfill CPD requirements annually.

Person Specification:

Essential Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Minimum 8 years' design consultancy experience in rail/energy/infrastructure.
  • Over 4 years' team management experience.
  • Bid proposal experience.

Desirable Skills:

  • Master's degree in civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Near Chartered membership of ICE or IStructE.
  • Financial management experience.
