The National Workshop Manager will be responsible for overseeing a large national fleet of over 150 vehicles and 160 trailers, ensuring a 24/7, 365-day operation that meets the needs of both internal and external customers. This role involves managing high standards within Scania Dealership accredited facilities, delivering effective leadership, and maintaining rigorous standards of vehicle maintenance and operational efficiency.

The Candidate;

  • A proven background within managing large HGV workshops
  • Have strong proven leadership skills and be able to demonstrate team leadership, motivation, coaching and the day-to-day management of a team; including performance reviews and staff appraisals.
  • National Management CPC qualification is desirable
  • Strong knowledge of EU legislation, VOSA & DVSA regulations.
  • Experience managing third-party contracts and vehicle procurement.
  • Recognized apprenticeship in HGV mechanics (e.g., City & Guilds).
  • Ability to develop and support current apprentices and apprenticeship programs.
  • Technical skills for diagnosing vehicle issues and understanding maintenance needs.
  • Knowledge of IRTE and Scania procedures, with experience in maintaining audit standards.
  • Comprehensive understanding of legal requirements for transport operations and working hours.
  • Budget management experience and understanding of sustainability practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a professional approach.
  • Proven experience leading a multi-site team
  • Ability to work to deadlines and great attention to detail

Duties and Responsibilities;

  • Lead, motivate, and manage a team, ensuring productivity, attendance, and conduct align with company standards.
  • Establish and monitor team KPIs to support successful National Fleet Operations.
  • Build a customer-centric and collaborative team environment focused on fleet and customer service.
  • Provide ongoing training, coaching, and performance reviews to develop team skills and drive high standards.
  • Streamline and enhance office-based work processes and procedures for increased efficiency.
  • Track and control expenditures within set budgetary targets, ensuring cost-effective fleet management.
  • Collaborate professionally with suppliers and maintain awareness of cost-related issues.
  • Oversee policies and procedures to maximize vehicle utilization and ensure fleet maintenance standards.
  • Monitor OCRS maintenance system for compliance and identify areas for operational improvement.
  • Ensure adherence to Health & Safety standards, HACCP controls, and all legal requirements within the workshop.
  • Maintain adequate staffing and contractor resources to meet company and legal obligations.
  • Plan for seasonal or trading variations, ensuring additional costs are managed and authorized as needed.
  • Investigate and respond to accidents or defects, reporting incidents to directors and operational management.
  • Conduct regular audits of the National Fleet to ensure compliance and legal requirements are met.
  • Represent the National Fleet department in meetings, managing change to support legal compliance.
