- Lead and manage a group of lawyers, offering expert legal advice to the council, its members, and officers.
- Handle a demanding caseload, delivering innovative legal solutions with minimal supervision.
- Provide leadership and guidance in reducing reliance on external legal services.
- Undertake advocacy where required and manage advocacy tasks within the team.
- Support the Monitoring Officer with advising on any procedural defaults or legal concerns.
- Contribute to the wider training of council staff, keeping them up-to-date with legal developments.
- Work flexibly within a paper-light environment using an electronic case management system.
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or CILEX Fellow, eligible to practise in England and Wales, with a current practising certificate (or in the process of applying).
- Substantial experience at a senior level, with a strong background in providing high-level legal advice.
- Strong leadership skills, with proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams.
- Knowledge of change management, project management, and continuous improvement principles.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels.
- Proven experience or aptitude for advocacy.
- Ability to manage budgets and resources effectively, ensuring value for money.
