SEMH Teaching Assistant

Position: SEND Teaching Assistant

Contract Type: Full-Time, Long term

Rate: £90-110+ per day, dependent upon experience

Location: Headingley, Leeds area

Role Overview:

As an SEND Teaching Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in the learning journey of students aged 5-18. Working closely with the teaching staff and the SENCO, you will provide targeted assistance and guidance to individuals and small groups, ensuring that their specific needs are met. You will contribute to the development and implementation of tailored learning plans, fostering a positive and engaging atmosphere within the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with SEND and SEMH needs, assisting them in accessing the curriculum effectively.
  • Collaborate with teachers and the SENCO to develop and implement personalised learning strategies that cater to individual requirements.
  • Promote positive behaviour management techniques, helping students to develop self-regulation skills and emotional resilience.
  • Foster a safe and inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and engaging in learning activities.
  • Monitor and track the progress of students, providing regular feedback to teachers and contributing to individual education plans (EHCPs)
  • Ably support the learning of pupils with a wide range of additional needs, including ASC, ADHD, and a range of social, emotional, mental health and behavioural difficulties.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians, keeping them informed about their child's progress and well-being.
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge in supporting SEND and SEMH students.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with students with Special Educational Needs/ Disabilities (SEND) or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of effective behaviour management techniques and strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with students, staff, parents and external agencies/ professionals effectively.
  • Empathetic and patient approach, with the ability to build positive relationships with students.
  • Relevant qualifications in education or psychology and teaching assistant qualifications (e.g. CACHE) are highly advantageous.
