Head of Finance

We are currently partnering with a local authority to recruit a dynamic and experienced Head of Finance for a temporary contract. This pivotal role offers the opportunity to lead the finance support for major service areas and the corporate Council, providing high-level strategic advice, ensuring the delivery of an efficient, effective, and compliant finance function, and promoting the efficient use of resources across the Council.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Lead and manage the finance team, ensuring high levels of performance and development.
  • Supervise the work carried out by matrix-managed staff and those employed on a casual or contracted basis.
  • Provide strategic financial advice and support to the Council's senior officers and the Executive.
  • Prepare and oversee the Council's budget, financial strategy, and treasury management.
  • Monitor and review financial performance, taking action and drafting reports as necessary.
  • Ensure continuous improvement in the use of financial IT systems and staff training.
  • Represent the Council at external meetings and act on its behalf in various capacities.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Significant experience managing financial services at a senior level in a large public sector organisation.
  • Proven track record of successful leadership and team management.
  • Strong knowledge of local government finance and accounting practices.
  • Full Qualified ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA
  • Excellent numeracy, literacy, and IT skills, with the ability to manage complex budgets and produce detailed financial reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of negotiating and influencing at high levels.
