General Description of Role:This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has been exposed to payroll processes and legislation and is looking to grow their career by focusing exclusively on payroll. As a Payroll Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the accurate and timely administration of in-house payroll processes, while learning and developing your skills in a structured and supportive environment. You will work closely with the Payroll Administrator and the wider team, gaining valuable experience in payroll operations and compliance.

This role is ideal for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual with some exposure to payroll who is eager to progress into a specialised payroll-focused position. The position offers a hybrid working arrangement, with the office based in DE74.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Payroll Administrator in processing payroll accurately and on time, ensuring attention to detail in all tasks.
  • Assist in checking payroll data for accuracy before review and submission.
  • Maintain organised records of completed and outstanding tasks, ensuring all work can be easily understood and picked up by others when needed.
  • Assist with ensuring statutory deductions (e.g., tax, National Insurance) are calculated and submitted correctly and on time.
  • Gain familiarity with and support the operation of the Time & Attendance system to ensure hourly employee payments are accurate.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end processes, including financial and tax year-end requirements.
  • Help maintain and update internal payroll procedures and documentation to reflect changes in legislation or processes.
  • Liaise with internal colleagues and external organisations such as pension advisors, local councils, and auditors, providing clear and timely communication.
  • Provide general administrative support to the payroll team, ensuring all documentation is well-maintained and compliant.
  • Learn and support additional tasks within the payroll department, such as benefits administration (e.g., life assurance claims, P11D forms) and ad-hoc projects as needed.
  • Contribute to team meetings, sharing ideas and offering support to colleagues.
  • Assist in identifying and addressing the root causes of payroll errors, helping to improve processes and minimise issues.

Who You Are:

  • You have a strong interest in payroll and are eager to build your expertise in this area.
  • You've had some exposure to payroll processing and an understanding of payroll legislation, either through previous work experience or studies.
  • You are detail-oriented and comfortable working with numerical data.
  • You're an excellent communicator who works well in a team and can build positive relationships with colleagues.
  • You're proactive, organised, and take pride in completing tasks to a high standard.
  • You have good IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
