About the Role:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who have SEMH needs and exhibit challenging behaviour. This role involves supporting vulnerable children, many of whom come from trauma backgrounds, to help them achieve their full potential in a safe and nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored support to pupils with SEMH needs, both in and out of the classroom.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes emotional well-being and resilience.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and other support staff to ensure the holistic development of each pupil.
  • Engage with pupils in therapeutic activities and interventions designed to address their specific needs.
  • Monitor and report on pupil progress, adapting support strategies as necessary.
  • Manage challenging behaviour using de-escalation techniques and positive reinforcement.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, encouraging their social and emotional growth.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience working with children who have SEMH needs and challenging behaviour.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices and the ability to apply them effectively.
  • Additional training such as Team Teach or similar behaviour management programs is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and patient in stressful situations.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Enhanced DBS check on the update service is mandatory.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Relevant qualifications in education, child development, psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience in therapeutic or counselling roles.
  • First aid certification.
