Purpose of Role:
The Business Development Director/Commercial Manager will lead business growth and commercial strategies across a group of three companies within the construction sector. This senior role requires a dynamic leader with proven expertise in business development, commercial management, and strategic client engagement. The successful candidate will leverage their industry knowledge to identify growth opportunities, drive revenue, and build long-lasting client partnerships that contribute to the group's long-term success.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Business Development and Market Expansion
    • Develop and execute a cohesive business development strategy to promote growth across the three companies.
    • Identify, assess, and pursue high-value opportunities within the construction industry to expand the client portfolio.
    • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of potential clients, ensuring effective follow-up and successful contract conversion.
    • Represent the group at key industry events and high-level networking opportunities to enhance brand visibility and credibility.
  2. Leadership and Team Development
    • Lead and inspire business development and commercial teams to meet and exceed performance targets.
    • Collaborate with senior leadership to align business development efforts with the group's strategic objectives.
    • Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and high performance.
  3. Market Analysis and Strategic Planning
    • Conduct comprehensive market analyses, staying ahead of industry trends, client needs, and competitor strategies.
    • Use insights to develop and adapt business strategies that respond to market shifts and maximize business opportunities.
    • Collaborate with leadership to refine strategies based on performance data and evolving market conditions.
  4. Client Relationship Management
    • Cultivate strong, strategic relationships with senior client stakeholders, acting as the primary point of contact and trusted advisor.
    • Oversee client engagement plans, ensuring exceptional service delivery and proactive problem resolution.
    • Identify and capitalize on opportunities to cross-sell and upsell services across the group.
  5. Proposal Development and Bid Management
    • Oversee the preparation of high-quality, competitive proposals and bids, ensuring alignment with client specifications and company standards.
    • Coordinate with pre-construction, technical, and estimating teams to create compelling, strategic bids.
    • Lead contract negotiations, ensuring terms meet revenue and profit targets while fostering long-term client partnerships.
  6. Commercial Oversight and Revenue Growth
    • Drive the development of commercial strategies that align with the group's financial goals.
    • Monitor contract performance, ensuring project profitability and identifying areas for revenue enhancement.
    • Report on business development activities, revenue projections, and strategic progress to the executive team.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to develop and implement business development and commercial strategies that drive growth.
  • Commercial Expertise: Strong understanding of contract negotiation, budget management, and profitability analysis.
  • Industry Knowledge: Extensive experience in the construction industry, ideally with knowledge relevant to roofing and related sectors.
  • Relationship Building: Exceptional interpersonal skills to foster trust and collaboration with clients and internal teams.
  • Organizational Acumen: Ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives while maintaining high standards.
  • Analytical and Adaptive: Competent in using market data and performance metrics to inform strategic decision-making.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Essential: Significant experience in senior business development or commercial management within the construction sector.
  • Desirable: Technical background, such as surveying or engineering, that supports a deeper understanding of client needs and project challenges.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency with CRM systems, business development tools, and comprehensive bid/proposal processes.
  • Health and Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with industry health and safety regulations and best practices.

  • Achievement of new business revenue and profitability targets.
  • Success rate in converting leads to contracts.
  • Client retention and satisfaction metrics.
