Description

The City of Liverpool College are currently looking for ESOL tutors to teach on a fixed term basis until the end                           of the academic year with the possibility of longer-term employment.  The School of ESOL offers English language        courses from beginners to Level 2. We offer a full-time study programme for 16-18 years and part time adult courses. There are approximately 1500 students studying in the School of ESOL. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and include refugees, asylum seekers and migrant workers from around the world.

We are seeking Main Grade Lecturers to teach across the study programme and adult courses. Ideally, successful candidates would have a recognised ELT (CELTA, Trinity TESOL etc) teaching qualification and have experience of teaching ESOL.  The school of ESOL aspires to achieving excellence in teaching and learning through innovative and excellent practice within ESOL teaching. However for suitably experienced tutors there may be scope for completing relevant qualifications whilst in post. 

Key Responsibilities
  • To contribute fully to the mission and values statement of the College ensuring its effective implementation in all aspects of College life.
  • To contribute to the College and curriculum area strategic objectives and to actively engage in the annual review.
  • To be aware of national developments in subject area and update knowledge and skills on an annual basis.
  • To plan, prepare and deliver high quality lessons in order to achieve effective management of the learning process.
  • Plan and use a range of effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques to engage and motivate students and encourage independence and student autonomy.
  • Establish a purposeful and motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued.
  • Establish and maintain procedures with students which promote and maintain appropriate behaviour, communication and respect for others, while challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.
  • To set and mark work in accordance with College and School Assessment policies.
  • To track all students’ progress and attendance in accordance with agreed College systems and policies.
  • To provide a balance of appropriate teaching styles and learning experiences.
  • To be aware of external/internal assessment procedures and to play and appropriate part in their 
  • Implementation.
  • Evaluate and improve own communication skills to maximise effective communication and overcome barriers.
  • To liaise with Head of School in contributing to the design of programmes and teaching approaches which will enable curriculum areas to achieve high standards and value added.
  • To communicate and consult with parents, carers and students including Parent’s Evening, Welcome Evenings, events and open evenings.
  • To ensure that all students in the subject area comply with College’s policies and procedures.
  • To provide enrichment opportunities that are exciting, motivating and enhance the student experience.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential: 

  • Educated to Level 4 e.g. Degree or equivalent in a relevant field 
  •   A recognised Teaching qualification or vocational experience/relevant experience 
  • Professional qualification relevant to the subject area 
  • Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programs of the College 
  • Proven relevant experience of curriculum planning, development & delivery. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of ESOL provision. 
  • Engaged in Continuing Professional Development 
  •  Minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete  
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves. 

Desirable: 

  • Experience of resource based learning 
  • An ICT qualification 
  • Membership of a relevant professional body 
  •  Experience of assessing students’ needs and planning curriculum for their benefit including Technology Enhanced Learning
  • Good understanding of curriculum development to meet the training needs of employers 
  • Good understanding of quality assurance and improvement processes 
  • The ability to teach ESOL at all levels would be desirable.
