VAT Manager
Brewer Morris are supporting on a VAT Manager hire for a highly commercial and ever evolving business within the travel industry. This will be a broad role with oversight on the compliance and reporting function and a mix of advisory, project, strategic and governance work. You must be an excellent communicator able to liaise with senior stakeholders and adapt to a changing commercial environment.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Ensure the business meets all external VAT reporting requirements and complies with relevant indirect tax laws.
- Identify Indirect tax opportunities and execute in line with commercial decisions and the company's Tax Strategy.
- Deliver high-quality technical tax advice proactively and in a timely manner.
- Maintain strong internal policies, processes, and controls, in alignment with Senior Accounting Officer obligations and the Business Risk Rating framework.
- Ensure VAT-related operations run smoothly and efficiently within the business.
- Line manage one direct report (Indirect Tax Analyst).
- Oversee and review the full VAT return process for two UK VAT Groups on a monthly basis.
- Support the VAT Lead in maintaining a strong relationship with HMRC.
- Provide advice on business-as-usual matters, such as reviewing contracts and determining correct VAT treatments for various sales and purchase transactions.
- Offer input on finance and commercial projects, as well as other new business initiatives.
- Conduct reviews of key business areas and provide recommendations as part of ongoing controls and risk assessments.
- Contribute to maintaining a robust governance framework and ensure readiness for Business Risk Rating and Senior Accounting Officer requirements.
- Stay updated on changes in indirect tax legislation and ensure their effective implementation.
- Deliver VAT training to the wider business.
Requirements:
- Proven experience in VAT compliance and advisory roles within a commercial setting.
- Strong knowledge of indirect tax compliance processes, particularly in the UK.
- Professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA, ATT, CTA (or equivalent), with several years of post-qualification experience in VAT (highly desirable)
- Excellent teamwork and influencing skills, with experience managing junior team members.
- Good time and project management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and escalate issues when necessary.
- Commercially astute, with the ability to provide clear, strategic advice and consider long-term implications when reviewing work or advising on projects.
- Proficient IT skills, especially in Excel, with Oracle and OneSource being desirable
