About the Role:
We are looking for an exceptional Head of Science to lead a dynamic and innovative department in a secondary school in Southwark, starting in September 2025. The role involves overseeing the delivery of GCSE Science across multiple specifications, including Edexcel Combined Science and Edexcel Separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). You will lead the department in delivering a high-quality curriculum, while ensuring students are well-prepared for progress to Level 3 qualifications.

 

Head of Science Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Science Department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across all year groups
  • Oversee the delivery of the Edexcel GCSE Science suite, including Combined Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
  • Ensure co-teaching and student flexibility between GCSE Combined Trilogy and GCSE Separate Sciences routes
  • Develop and implement the Science curriculum in line with the school’s goals and the needs of students
  • Monitor and support the progress of students across all Science GCSE specifications
  • Lead departmental initiatives to enhance teaching practice and student outcomes
  • Manage and support the professional development of Science teachers within the department
  • Contribute to wider school leadership through the TLR responsibilities, working closely with senior leadership

 

 

Head of Science requirements:

  • QTS (or equivalent) with significant experience in Science education at secondary level.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing and developing a Science Department.
  • Expertise in teaching GCSE Science, specifically Edexcel Combined Science and Edexcel Separate Sciences.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to lead and inspire a team.
  • A passion for Science education and a commitment to student success.
  • Experience with curriculum development and assessment within the Science Department.

 

GCSE Science Information:

  • Edexcel Combined Science: Students following this route receive two GCSEs. The subject content and required practicals are aligned with Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, allowing flexibility for co-teaching and moving students between courses
  • Edexcel Separate Sciences: Students can choose to pursue GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, and GCSE Physics individually, enabling them to gain in-depth knowledge of each scientific discipline
  • Students on either the Combined Trilogy or Separate Science routes will be well-prepared for progression to Level 3 qualifications

KS5 provides the opportunity for learners to focus on varied specialisms, to provide broad-based knowledge and preparation for deeper studies for university and beyond.
