Pentagram Design London is seeking a highly organised and detail-orientated Archivist who can work with our Partners and teams to consolidate and catalogue Pentagram’s archive. The individual will facilitate the efficient transfer of our archive from our external storage and London Studio to its new home contributing to the preservation of and accessibility of important design materials.
The ideal candidate will have an appreciation for all things graphic design, strong organisation skills, strong archival best practices and a keen eye for detail. They will be happy getting involved in the day-to-day and being able to handle multiple tasks within a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Archive Sorting & Organisation: Systematically sort through the existing archive collection, assessing each item for relevance and condition.
Cataloguing: Label and catalogue archive items with proper descriptions, dates, and other key identifying information. Ensure each item is tagged and catalogued in accordance with archival standards.
Storage Management: Ensure that all archival materials are stored securely and appropriately in line with preservation guidelines. Implement proper storage methods to protect materials from degradation.
Condition Assessment: Evaluate the physical condition of archived materials, identifying any necessary special handling requirements.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of each archive item, tracking its location, condition, and status throughout the sorting and storage process.
Archival Return Support: Assist with the safe return and relocation of archive items to their new designated home, coordinating logistics and ensuring proper documentation.
Collaboration: Work closely with Partners to ensure smooth transitions during the archival process and that items are returned to the correct locations.
Access & Retrieval: Assist in facilitating access to archived materials for authorised personnel putting in an efficient and robust process for future needs.
Digitisation: Photograph and film all items, ensuring items are accurately recorded to allow for storage on the digital archive
Key Requirements:
Proven experience as an archivist, librarian, or in a similar role involving document management and archival systems. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle large volumes of materials. Knowledge of archival principles, preservation techniques, and cataloguing systems Ability to assess the condition of materials and determine appropriate storage or conservation methods. Familiarity with archival software and databases for cataloguing and tracking. Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and independently. Ability to lift and move archival materials as necessary (may include lifting boxes or containers). Desirable Qualifications:
Degree or certification in archival studies, library science, history, or a related field. Or the equivalent experience within a creative archive environment. Experience with digital archives and digitisation projects. Previous experience with the return or relocation of archive collections.
What We Offer:
Fixed term 6-12 Month contract Monday - Thursday 9.30am - 6pm 30 hours a week - £28,000 per annum (FTE £35,000 for 37.5 hours a week)
20 days of annual leave (pro rata), plus Christmas closure, bank holidays, and additional days for long service (after 2 years)
