With a strong reputation for excellence, Chambers’ Members handle complex cases that address important legal, ethical, and social issues.  Chambers is now seeking to recruit a newly created position of Billing Clerk to join the finance team dealing with the billing of Barristers’ professional fees.

With 81 barristers and 26 members of staff, Chambers has seen significant growth over the past decade, expanding their Silks team from 9 to 25 KCs, and recruiting 45 new tenants. The Role

Reporting to and working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, Director of Clerking and Head of Finance as Billing Clerk, you will oversee, implement, and continually improve Chambers’ billing systems. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure that all professional fees are billed accurately and processed promptly. The successful candidate will work closely with both the Clerking (practice management) and Fees teams to streamline billing procedures, implement best practices for efficiency, and monitor the performance of billing operations.

This role requires strong organisational skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to identify areas for process improvement to support Chambers’ financial objectives.

Suitable applicants will combine practical billing experience with financial acumen. They will possess a collaborative team mindset and client care. This is a hands-on role, where the successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing success of Chambers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Chambers Time Recording system and prompt transfer of times to cases
  • Chasing, where necessary relevant persons for billing information
  • Process invoices and fee notes across all practice areas and funding streams at appropriate times
  • To ensure prompt payment of Chambers invoices and fee notes check bills are correctly addressed and meet the client’s requirements i.e. PO numbers, references etc
  • Deal with all queries regarding time recording and billing (invoices and fee notes)
  • Prompt follow-up of billing queries and requests
  • Oversee submission of bills/payments on account applications on CCMS
  • Review unbilled reports with a view to billing outstanding matters. Develop points of contact, building strong relationships with barristers, clients, and teams across Chambers
  • Continuous analysis and review of the billing function within Chambers
  • To put forward recommendations for discussion on improvements to Chambers’ billing system 
  • Providing general assistance with other billing and some fee-related tasks and projects when required

The Ideal Candidate

Chambers is seeking a dynamic, highly personable individual with experience in a similar role dealing with professional fee collection; they will have the following traits;

  • Keen attention to detail
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including good spoken and written English
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues, barristers and clients
  • Calm, patient and flexible approach to work in a very busy environment
  • Work well under pressure with the ability to multi-task
  • Professional attitude and presentation
  • Good organisational skills to ensure all financial information is accurate and up-to-date

Personal Attributes:

  • 8+ years in a similar role (preferably in another leading Chambers)
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
  • The ability to handle challenging conversations with tact and professionalism
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to think strategically and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
