About the role
The Maintenance Team is responsible for day-to-day maintenance and on-going site support services and maintenance of metering, pay-as-you-go and related IT equipment and for some sites we also are responsible for maintenance of the whole energy network. For example, for a heating system this will be from the heat generation equipment (usually boilers) in the plantroom to the individual dwellings heating source which is usually a Heat Interface Unit (HIU).
The Commercial Gas Heat Network Engineering team is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and efficient operation of heat network equipment, including boilers, chillers, fan coil units, HIUs, valves, meters, PAYG devices, and metering systems deployed within client developments.
Working closely with supply partners and following documented workflows and processes, you will carry out maintenance, repairs, commissioning, and commercial gas safety checks on commercial heating systems. Additionally, you will handle fault detection, repairs, and maintenance of heat metering equipment within the domestic heating sector. This role involves working in the built environment on multi-million-pound construction projects as well as in residential properties.
As a Heat Network Engineer, you will play a critical role in supporting the day-to-day operations of site-based activities, with a focus on maintaining and optimising domestic and commercial heat networks. This position requires extensive knowledge of district heating systems, with responsibilities spanning design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of communal heating systems, primarily within residential developments.
Specific responsibilities include:
Maintenance of metering and billing systems and heating and cooling systems.
HIU and heat meter replacement, maintenance and servicing and retrofitting Pay-As-You-Go metering systems.
An opportunity exists for a Senior Commercial Heat Network Engineer who will also support with the development and growth of a team of Commercial Heat Network Engineers, working with the Head of Maintenance to build, develop and provide technical support.
Location and working hours:
- Primary Location: Field-based, with occasional meetings in the London (WeWork, Moor Place) and Peterborough (Stuart House) offices.
- Travel Requirements: Available to travel across the UK, including occasional working weeks away from home and overnight stays.
- Working Hours:
- 37.5 hours per week.
- Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:30.
- Includes a 30-minute lunch break and two 15-minute breaks each working day.
- Breaks are to be scheduled between jobs, ensuring minimal disruption to work responsibilities.
This role requires flexibility and the ability to manage time effectively while balancing fieldwork, office meetings, and travel commitments.
Qualifications, Skills & Attributes:
Commercial & Domestic Gas Qualifications:
COCN1, CIGA1, ICPN1, TPCP1/1A, CCN1, WAT1, CKR1, HTR1, CPA1 (with a minimum of six months remaining prior to renewal).
Plumbing and Heating Certification:
NVQ Level 2 or higher in plumbing and heating is essential.
- Experience:
Knowledge of heating control systems and prior experience in service and maintenance environments, particularly within district/community heating schemes, large-scale plant rooms, or energy centres. - Industry Knowledge:
Understanding of communal/district heating schemes and experience working within the service industry.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

NIC 18th edition in domestic wiring (or equivalent) preferred, but not required.
Smart Metering Experience: Previous experience with smart metering systems, RF networks, or similar field-based technologies is preferred.
SMSTS or SSSTS Health & Safety certification is desirable.
Additional Requirements:
Clear Driving Licence: A valid, clear UK driving licence.
DBS Clearance: Basic DBS clearance (Disclosure and Barring Service).
Work Eligibility: Must be eligible to work in the UK.
References: Two satisfactory professional references.
Must hold or be able to obtain a CSCS card.
