Morgan Hunt are working with a Healthcare Regulator who are currently looking for an interim Assistant Director of Governance (Secretary to the Council) to lead the Governance team to ensure the delivery of high quality, responsive secretariat services to the Chair, Council, Committees and Executive.
You will provide expert professional governance advice to the Chair, Council and Executive team ensuring the organisations governance framework, policies and processes meet Privy Council and Charity Regulator requirements and reflect best practice governance in the public/charity sector.
You will advise and support the Chair on selection and induction processes for Council and Committee members; as well as advise and support the Chair of the Appointments Board on the appointment, fees, induction, training, retention and performance of Panel Members, Panel Chairs, and Legal Assessors.
As a senior leader within the Office of the Chair and Chief Executive the postholder will deputise on behalf of the Chief of Staff to the Chair and Chief Executive in troubleshooting on issues of concern to the Chair and Chief Executive.
The successful candidate will have substantial experience working in a Senior Governance position across the Public/Charity Sector, with proven experience of successful operational management, budget management and strategic leadership. You will have experience providing expert governance advice to a range of senior stakeholders, managing a governance team and function (within a large organisation) as well as managing secretariate services for a Council and Board.
You will have relevant professional qualification (Chartered Secretary) or equivalent experience, with highly developed communication and influential skills, and an ability to advise on difficult and confidential matters.

Annual Salary: £90,000 - £100,000

Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Key Responsibilities
- As Secretary to the Council, provide expert, timely, authoritative professional advice on governance best practice to support the Chair, Council and Chief Executive
- Support the organisation to deliver its strategic priorities through provision of a sound, corporate governance framework, supporting policies and processes
- Support the development of the proposed new governance framework under regulatory reform, ensuring a seamless transition which secures corporate memory
- Lead the provision of high quality, effective and responsive Secretariat services for the Council, Committees, and the Executive Board to enable them to discharge their duties effectively
- Advise on and support the selection of Council and Committee members, while ensuring appropriate induction, development and appraisal of all Council and Committee members, to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to make a full and high-quality contribution
- Provide excellent leadership and direction and keep performance improvement under review and ensure that performance targets are met
Person Specification
- Relevant professional qualification (Chartered Secretary) or equivalent by experience
- Substantial experience of advising on governance best practice in the public sector, charity law and the requirements of the Charity regulators
- Proven track record of providing high quality effective, person-centred Secretariat services at Council/Executive level
- Experience of working at a senior level in a high profile and complex environment; skills in understanding and responding to different perspectives and taking a collaborative, cross-organisational perspective
- Experience of leading and managing teams
- Detailed knowledge of governance best practice in the public sector, charity law and requirements of the Charity Commission and Office of the Charity Regulator
