Job Purpose / Overview

Are you an experienced Design Manager with a passion for large-scale civil engineering projects? Rullion is proud to be working on behalf of Sizewell C, one of the UK's most significant nuclear power projects. Join our team and be a key player in shaping the future of clean energy in the UK. Sizewell C is now in its critical design and construction phases, and we're looking for a Design Manager to lead technical design aspects within the Civil Works Programme.

Principal Accountabilities

As a Design Manager, you will:

  • Lead the design process for complex civil engineering projects, ensuring the integration of constructability and design requirements.
  • Manage the technical aspects of the end-to-end design process, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including Responsible Designers, Nuclear Services, and supply chain partners.
  • Oversee technical assurance, including coordination of 3D environment deliverables and ensuring compliance with UK design standards.
  • Facilitate the management of technical risks, ensuring risks are communicated and mitigated efficiently.
  • Lead technical reviews and approvals as part of the project's governance process, working with stakeholders to ensure all designs meet quality, budget, and schedule demands.
  • Oversee compliance with CDM regulations, ensuring designers fulfill their responsibilities.
  • Provide technical leadership to your team of Project Engineers, ensuring project outcomes align with both SZC and stakeholder objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer status (MICE or MIStructE) or working towards chartership.
  • Extensive experience in managing multidisciplinary design phases for large-scale civil engineering projects.
  • Strong background in heavy civil engineering structures (reinforced concrete, structural steel) or ground engineering (earthworks, drainage, foundations).
  • Practical knowledge of UK design standards (e.g., British Standards) and construction practices.
  • Proven ability to lead technically complex teams and manage stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of engaging at all levels-from project teams to stakeholders.

Desirable:

  • Experience in nuclear-related projects, particularly in the design and construction of safety-critical systems and structures.
  • A higher degree (MSc, MEng, or PhD) in Ground Engineering/Geotechnics or similar.
  • Previous experience working on major projects such as Hinkley Point C.
