Senior Drainage Engineer
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Drainage Engineer to join an established infrastructure team within a well-respected consultancy. With a strong and growing workload, this role is ideal for an experienced professional with a consultancy background who thrives in a varied and dynamic environment.
The Role
The ideal candidate will be an all-rounder, comfortable with all aspects of drainage design, from feasibility studies to producing Flood Risk Assessments and Drainage Strategies for planning applications. Additionally, they will be experienced in detailed drainage design, covering both highway and on-plot drainage schemes.
This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects across the UK, including:
路New residential urban extensions and garden villages
路Major film production studios
路City centre commercial developments
路Designing walking, cycling, bus priority facilities, and street layouts to create better spaces
Key Responsibilities
路Delivering drainage designs across all project stages, from feasibility to construction
路Preparing fee proposals and managing projects to budget
路Providing technical guidance and delegating tasks to junior engineers
路Acting as a key client-facing representative, liaising with developers, public bodies, and contractors
Requirements
路At least 5 years' experience in drainage design within a UK consultancy environment
路Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Site 3D, and InfoDrainage (or similar software)
路Strong knowledge of drainage design standards, guidelines, and approval processes
路Experience preparing Flood Risk Assessments and Technical Notes
路Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
路Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
路Chartered or working towards chartership is advantageous but not essential
Technical Experience
路Hands-on experience in drainage design for civil engineering projects, including SuDS
路Liaison with Lead Local Flood Authorities, Environment Agency, and statutory bodies
路Section 104 / 106 / 185 drainage design and applications
路Design of surface water and foul drainage systems for residential, commercial, and industrial projects
路Highway drainage design in line with DMRB and Local Authority guidance
路Modelling of SuDS features such as ponds, swales, rain gardens, and attenuation tanks
路Experience with construction phase processes, including handling contractor queries
Candidates with additional highway design experience (e.g., Section 278 / 38 designs, vehicle tracking, car park design, and earthworks modelling) would be highly desirable, but this is not essential for the role.
