Windows Engineer | Infrastructure Engineer | 3rd Line

The role can be home based with travel to the office a couple of times a week.

Other benefits include a 35 hour working week and 34 days annual leave plus bank holidays.

Overall purpose of job

The main purpose of the role is to ensure the smooth day to day operation of all IT services. To plan, test and implement projects and perform operational upgrades for hardware and software, and to support and respond to queries from colleagues and users.  

  • To undertake projects and lead server deployments for new services 
  • To install, upgrade and maintain software within the Windows estate 
  • To undertake system administrator duties as part of the systems team 
  • To provide knowledge transfer to team members 
  • To provide input on architecture and software changes to improve systems and services.  
  • To resolve user, systems and software issues when necessary 
  • To liaise with external suppliers through support site mechanisms to resolve systems and software issues.  
  • To manage the licensing arrangements where appropriate 

 Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support, maintain, monitor and configure a range of Windows Server and storage infrastructure.
  • Oversee account provisioning processes 
  • Manage system configuration and updates and upgrades with a focus on security (Patch management) 
  • Automate tasks with scripting and automation tools (SCCM, PatchManager Plus)   
  • Provide system monitoring, performance tuning, optimisation, and capacity planning 
  • Troubleshoot incidents and handle escalations to vendors where appropriate 
  • Work well within a team, with strong customer focus, and sense of ownership. 
  • Able to create and collaborate with others. 
  • Creation and maintenance of technical documentation. 
  • Fulfil a technical role in the IT Services team, providing knowledge-transfer to team members when experience dictates. 
  • Liaising with 3rd party vendors and managed service partners to deliver a highly available always-on service. 
  • Making recommendations for system improvements, optimizations and efficiencies. 
  • Server specification, installation, and configuration  
  • Implementation of new technology as part of new projects  

Knowledge and Skills required:

  • Server-side scripting ability for Windows environments (PowerShell)  
  • Systems Security 
  • Active Directory and Group policy 
  • Server Hardware 
  • Virtualization (Ideally VMware)

Ideal but not essential:

  • Network understanding
  • Storage technologies 
  • VPN technologies 
  • SAN 
  • Cloud (Azure/AWS) 
  • Remote Access technologies (VPN, RDS etc)
