Our client is based in West London and are 2 authorities combining their Building Control & Surveying services. They are seeking a Head of Building Control and are offering a market leading rate of approximately £750/day (IR35), but there may be scope to negotiate further for an exceptional candidate.

As the Head of Building Control you will work alongside a number of senior officers representing the Strategic Planning and Infrastructure function, which comprises Building Control, Strategic Planning, Development Management and Planning Enforcement.

Ambitious, enthusiastic and forward thinking, you will use your extensive Building Control knowledge and technical ability to deliver statutory Building Control functions and contribute to customer focused, results driven service delivery. You will need to be able to work autonomously with the minimum of supervision to provide creative and innovative answers to complex problems. Having a scrupulous attention to detail, especially with regards to technical aspects and operational processes, you will drive efficiency and professional excellence.

You will lead, motivate and inspire the Building Control team and contribute towards the exciting range of projects across the borough. This also includes supporting service delivery targets, dealing with dangerous structures, demolitions and attending other emergency incidents. We have a number of partnership working agreements that you would lead on so it is important to develop effective client relationships.

As our Head of Building Control you will provide guidance and direction to support your Building Control colleagues.

There is a hybrid working arrangement role with the expectation to meet the Building Control Team as needed and be available to attend site inspections.

About You

To apply you should be a Class 4 Registered Building Inspector but Class 3 applicants with extensive experience will be considered.

To be successful in the role of Head of Building Control, you will be able to demonstrate the following key points:

  • Able to lead, inspire and motivate a team of Building Control professionals including those commencing their career within the industry.
  • Significant experience of managing a Building Control service.
  • Ability to prepare, manage and develop the Building Control service to meet the demands of the Building Safety Regulator and Building Safety Act 2022.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge and complete understanding of the Building Act, Building Regulations and all associated legislation including an ability to provide interpretation of the functional requirements.
  • Educated to degree level in Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering and/or be able to demonstrate learning at an equivalent level.
  • Member of a relevant professional body such as RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent with relevant Building Control bias and evidence of achieving CPD requirement.
  • Demonstrable competence gained in plan examination, site inspections in a specialist skill area such as structural, thermal, access, fire engineering and/or external wall systems, working at or towards Level 6A of the LABC Detailed Competency Matrix.
  • An excellent working knowledge of legislation, regulations and professional codes of practice relevant to the service area, including associated Building Control functions offered by a Local Authority.
  • Substantial experience in Building Control and possessing the ability to effectively manage a range of projects from domestic and dwelling houses up to 5 storeys through to complex commercial, mixed use and high rise schemes, examining plans and carrying out site inspections, initiating and dealing with enforcement action.
  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge of the construction industry, methods, techniques and materials.
  • Demonstrate an excellent understanding of local government services and procedures.

The role is initially offered on a contract basis for 6 months but is fully expected to extend.
