BMS Operations Manager

Location – London (UK & Ireland Travel)

Salary - £70,000 - £80,000 +  car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

Position Summary

As an Operations Manager within the Buildings as an Energy System division, you will play a key role in modernizing legacy building stock across the UK by designing and delivering innovative energy solutions for large buildings, campuses, and developments. Reporting directly to the Energy System Business Manager, you will drive the transformation of non-domestic energy systems and ensure that the business is positioned as a provider of choice in this rapidly growing sector.

This role requires meticulous attention to detail, extensive experience in construction and energy systems, and a passion for engaging and managing diverse stakeholders. You will lead a team of Project Development Managers, fostering project management excellence and driving business growth through strategic propositions and partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

Governance and Management

  • Develop and implement robust project governance and management practices with direct reports and central operations teams.
  • Ensure adherence to industry best standards for project management excellence.
  • Secure senior management buy-in and ongoing sponsorship for projects.

Project Development and Delivery

  • Collaborate across business units (Distributed Energy, EV, Heat Networks, Business Energy, Digital Services) to design client-focused propositions that capitalize on SSE’s cross-business capabilities.
  • Lead high-performing, multidisciplinary teams to deliver complex projects on time, within budget, and aligned with client priorities.
  • Serve as the primary client interface during proposition and bid phases, leading contract negotiations through to close and procurement.
  • Monitor the market for emerging technologies and integrate client drivers and market intelligence into all propositions and bids.
  • Oversee the transition from bid phase to project delivery, ensuring internal approvals comply with governance processes.

Strategic Growth and Innovation

  • Drive business growth by developing new propositions and partnerships with public and private sector organisations.
  • Identify and evaluate commercial opportunities, balancing potential benefits with associated risks.
  • Stay informed about EU and UK policy frameworks related to heat, energy, carbon, and construction, ensuring compliance and alignment with strategic objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Communicate complex projects effectively to internal stakeholders for governance approval.
  • Build relationships with external partners and internal stakeholders to enhance collaboration and resource planning.

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven ability to manage complex, multidisciplinary propositions spanning various areas of expertise.
  • Extensive experience in the construction or energy systems industry, with a focus on non-domestic energy systems.
  • Strong understanding of EU and UK policy frameworks related to energy, carbon, and construction.
  • Demonstrated expertise in commercial risk assessment and resource planning.
  • Exceptional organisational and communication skills to manage diverse stakeholders effectively.
  • Familiarity with market trends and emerging technologies within the energy sector.
