Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Senior Design Manager to lead and coordinate the design team and contractor designers to deliver comprehensive and detailed construction designs. The role involves managing the design process from conception to completion while ensuring quality, cost-effectiveness, health, safety, and environmental considerations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Client Collaboration: Understand and support the client's goals and objectives throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Uphold our clients Health and Safety standards, adhering to the relevant manuals and plans for both individual packages and overall project integration.
  • Design Management: Guide the design process, exploring options, alternatives, and benchmarking against other external projects.
  • Continuous Improvement: Incorporate lessons learned from previous projects into current design planning.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Follow environmental policies to minimize waste and manage energy effectively.
  • Support Project Systems: Assist in setting up and implementing project systems, procedures, and managing design queries.

Project Definition:

  • Assist in the development of project briefs and outline specifications.
  • Identify and define design criteria, scopes, and interfaces.
  • Negotiate fees, set deliverables, and manage design schedules.

Design Stages:

  • Monitor design team progress and ensure alignment with buildability requirements.
  • Review and coordinate design information, managing design changes and ensuring design completeness.
  • Identify the need for samples, mock-ups, and design risk assessments.

Construction Procurement:

  • Assist with the procurement strategy, defining package scopes, evaluating design capabilities of tenderers, and supporting tender evaluations.

Construction Phase:

  • Oversee contractor design submissions and ensure timely information flow between stakeholders.
  • Assist in reviewing contractor proposals, addressing technical queries, and coordinating interfaces between work packages.

Handover and Completion:

  • Support final inspections, gather as-built information, and facilitate client feedback.
  • Ensure proper documentation of lessons learned for future projects.

Working Relationships:

You will report to the Director - M&E and work closely with various internal teams including Development Management, ESG, Project Managers, Senior Construction Managers, and the Quality Manager. Additionally, you will collaborate with external partners such as the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, design consultants, and the client.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Essential: Mechanical Design experience with a consultant on commercial, residential, and retail projects.
  • Desirable: Experience with contracting organizations.
  • Qualification: Degree in Engineering.
  • Desirable: Membership of CIBSE or IEE.
  • Expertise: Strong familiarity with the integration of various design disciplines (architecture, structural engineering, M&E) and coordination of package interfaces.
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication, analytical thinking, and conflict resolution abilities; capable of managing difficult situations tactfully and persuasively.
  • Technical Proficiency: Intermediate IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Project or Microsoft Project), and experience with document management systems (Asite experience preferred).
  • Time Management: Ability to deliver quality work within tight deadlines.
  • Professional Development: Commitment to ongoing development within Building Services Design is highly desirable.
