Project-Based Health & Safety Manager – Flagship Commercial Fit-Out

Location: Central London
Salary: £45,000 - £60,000

4Site Recruitment is looking for a Project-Based Health & Safety Manager to oversee a flagship £60m commercial fit-out project near Liverpool Street. This is an opportunity to work with a well-established main contractor on a high-profile scheme in central London.

The Role

As the H&S Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring all health and safety regulations are adhered to on-site, working closely with the project team to maintain a safe and compliant working environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement and manage H&S policies and procedures in line with UK regulations.

  • Assist in the ongoing development and updates to the Construction Phase Plan as the project progresses.

  • Oversee the review and implementation of the fire safety plan, ensuring emergency and evacuation procedures are regularly updated and practiced.

  • Conduct formal weekly health and safety site inspections, followed by debrief sessions with the site management team.

  • Identify staff training needs and develop a tailored training plan for the site management team.

  • Work closely with the site management team to identify risks, ensuring safe systems of work are in place and maintained.

  • Manage and take responsibility for all health and safety standards on site, ensuring a safe environment at all times, particularly access routes.

  • Monitor and manage subcontractor compliance with required toolbox talks and ensure they are delivered to all site workers.

  • Manage the induction process for new personnel on site, ensuring all workers receive a comprehensive induction.

  • Investigate incidents and near misses, implementing corrective actions where required.

  • Maintain accurate H&S records, including risk assessments and method statements.

  • Ensure Sub-Contractors are adequately prepared to undertake their tasks, including reviewing risk assessments and method statements.

  • Facilitate and chair bi-weekly 'black hat' safety meetings, ensuring safety concerns are addressed and actioned promptly.

  • Stay abreast of changes in legislation, codes of practice, and industry best practice.

  • Attend daily activity briefings, offering expert advice and guidance on health and safety.

  • Support the management team during HSE inspections, audits, and incident investigations.

Requirements
  • Emergency first aid (1 day)

  • 2-3 years of experience in health and safety within construction, preferably in commercial fit-out.

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent.

  • SMSTS – Site Management Safety Training Scheme.

  • CSCS Card (Health & Safety).

  • Strong knowledge of UK HSE regulations.

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.

  • Ability to work proactively within a site-based role.

  • Fire Safety qualifications (desirable).

  • First Aid at Work certification (desirable).

  • Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) (desirable).
