Head of Building Safety

MMP Consultancy currently have an opportunity for a Head of Building Safety to join a local authority based in Central/West London. My client can offer hybrid working with 3-4 days p/w working in the offices.

My client are offering a day rate of 750p/d Umbrella.

The successful candidate must have senior head of experience and extensive knowledge of the Building Safety Act and BSR- Building safety Regulator and how that translates across asset management .

The Role:

As the Head of Building Safety, you will take a leadership role in developing, implementing, and overseeing the council's building safety strategies, ensuring full compliance with current regulations and emerging legislation. You will also provide mentorship and practical support to the Building Safety Manager, working together to meet the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) demands and ensure robust internal reporting. Key responsibilities include writing building safety cases and addressing BSR clarification requests, while also serving as the key link between the Building Safety team and the Strategic Director. You will drive the integration of building safety into the wider asset management function and ensure effective collaboration across teams and with external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the development and implementation of Westminster Council's building safety policy and strategy.
• Ensure full compliance with the Building Safety Act and other relevant legislation.
• Mentor and support the Building Safety Manager in meeting BSR demands.
• Write building safety cases and respond to BSR clarification requests.
• Drive the integration of building safety processes across asset management.
• Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring collaborative efforts across departments.
• Act as the primary point of contact for building safety issues, advising senior leadership on risks and opportunities.
• Drive resident engagement on building safety matters, ensuring transparency and trust.
• Manage relationships with contractors, consultants, and regulatory bodies to ensure performance standards are met.
• Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) for building safety and provide regular updates to senior management.

About You: We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated individual with significant expertise in building safety and compliance, ideally within a local authority or housing provider. You should be confident in leading large-scale safety programmes and possess strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Key Requirements:

• Extensive experience working with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and in managing building safety for high-rise and complex residential buildings.
• Proven experience in writing building safety cases and addressing BSR clarification requests.
• A relevant surveying qualification or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrable experience in successful mentoring within building safety or related technical areas.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong report writing ability.
• Strong leadership and people management skills, with a track record of leading successful teams.
• In-depth knowledge of the Building Safety Act, Fire Safety Act, and related legislation.
• Proven experience in risk management, safety compliance, and resident engagement.
