If so, GSL Education invites you to apply for an exciting opportunity as a Science Technician in a dynamic secondary school based in Tower Hamlets. This role requires precision, organisation and a strong understanding of laboratory protocols. You will assist teaching staff in setting up practical experiments, maintaining an orderly lab environment and ensuring that all safety procedures are strictly followed.

Role Overview:

As a Science Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting the Science Department, ensuring that all practical lessons are well-prepared and meet safety regulations. You will be responsible for the organisation, maintenance and preparation of laboratory equipment, chemicals and resources, enabling teachers and students to engage in hands-on scientific learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, organise and maintain laboratory equipment, materials and chemicals for practical science lessons.
  • Support science teachers in setting up experiments and demonstrations, ensuring smooth lesson delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, implementing necessary risk assessments for all lab activities.
  • Maintain an inventory of laboratory stock, ordering new supplies as needed to support the curriculum.
  • Monitor and maintain equipment, ensuring that all apparatus and materials are stored correctly and in good condition.
  • Assist students in practical lessons where necessary, guiding correct handling of scientific equipment.
  • Safely dispose of waste materials and chemicals under legal and environmental regulations.
  • Stay updated with the latest safety protocols and scientific developments, contributing to a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Support in the development of new experiments and learning resources to enhance the science curriculum.

Requirements of the Science Technician:

  • Previous experience working as a Science Technician within a school, college, or laboratory environment is highly advantageous.
  • Experience in preparing, organising and maintaining laboratory equipment and resources for practical science lessons and also in stock management, ordering laboratory supplies and maintaining inventory records.
  • A track record of ensuring compliance with safety regulations and conducting risk assessments for experiments.
  • A strong understanding of laboratory procedures, equipment and scientific principles relevant to a secondary school science curriculum.
  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations, including COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) guidelines, CLEAPSS (Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services) safety procedures and risk assessment protocols.
  • Familiarity with the safe handling, preparation and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials in a school setting.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
