BSL Teaching Assistant

Are you an experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated Teaching Assistant with a BSL Level 1 qualification or above? If you have a genuine desire to empower Deaf children and help them thrive, we want you to join our dedicated team at a Primary School in Lewisham.

About the Role: This full-time position offers the opportunity to work under the guidance of the Teacher of the Deaf, utilising a Total Communication approach to ensure Deaf pupils can access learning both in their mainstream classroom and in our specialised Centre for the Deaf.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the learning and educational progress of pupils with hearing impairments through small group and one-to-one interventions.
  • Collaborate with the Teacher of the Deaf and class teachers to promote inclusion and engagement in all learning experiences.
  • Use BSL to facilitate communication and ensure Deaf pupils can participate fully in the curriculum.
  • Foster independence in learning and encourage participation in various aspects of school life.

What We're Looking For:

  • BSL Level 1 qualification or above and experience of working within a primary school.
  • The ability and willingness to understand the needs of students from different social backgrounds, sensory impairments and special educational needs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication in addition to their BSL communication.
  • The ability to form and maintain appropriate professional relationships and boundaries with young people and adults.
  • Proven experience working with Deaf children or those with additional needs
  • Strong communication skills and a compassionate approach
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment
