Autism specialist teaching assistant in Ravenscourt Park, Hammersmith, London

Mainstream primary school, opportunity to work within years 1 - 6

£80 - £110 per day (£450 - £550 per week)

Reeson Education is working with a lovely primary school local to Ravenscourt Park station in Hammersmith and Fulham, London. This primary school has 2 classes per year group, classes of around 20 children and supports a well-maintained Autism and special needs unit. The senior leadership team are supportive and focus on both student and staff development, you will have ample opportunities to participate in team training days.

About the ASD teaching assistant role:

  • You will be working on a one-to-one basis with a child with ASD (Autism), providing day to day care and support both within in and outside of the classroom
  • Your day will start by assisting the teacher to set up the classroom, preparing materials and activities for the day, followed by welcoming in the children and greeting your 1:1 child.
  • Throughout the school day you will assist the class teacher with lessons and activities, manage the general behaviour in the classroom and work with small groups of pupils who require additional support with key subjects.
  • In relation to your one-to-one support you will work with your designated child throughout the day, you will work with them to grasp an understanding of each lesson, using specialist techniques to capture the child's attention and monitor behaviour.
  • You will be involved in numerous staff and parent meetings including meeting with outside support such as occupational therapists to devise plans and structures to best support your child's learning. You will receive support from the class teacher, other ASD teaching assistants, the school SENCO and members of the senior leadership team.

Desired qualifications of the teaching assistant:

  • Ideally you will have a degree or child-related qualification such as a CACHE levels 1, 2 or 3.
  • You will have some form of professional child-related experience such as previous teaching assistant, sports or summer camp coaching, childcare etc. We would also consider candidates with professional or personal experience supporting special needs.
  • The successful teaching assistant will be able to work off their own initiative, have a desire to work with special needs and help child to achieve the most out of their education. You will need to have compassion and be able to set clear boundaries.
