Our client is looking for a Senior Drainage Engineer to join their well-established infrastructure team and support their growing workload. They seek a well-rounded professional with expertise in drainage design-covering feasibility studies, Flood Risk Assessments (FRA), Drainage Strategies for planning, and detailed design for both highway and on-plot drainage. This is a long term contract position that falls outside IR35. You will be required to work in the London office 2 days per week.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of relevant design standards and guidelines, be actively involved in fee proposals and project management, and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. They should be confident in a client-facing role and able to delegate work effectively while mentoring junior staff. Our client works with private developers, public bodies, and contractors, so strong communication and collaboration skills are essential.

Requirements

路Minimum 5 years' experience in a UK consultancy, working on diverse drainage design projects across various project stages.
路Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Site 3D, and InfoDrainage (or equivalent software).
路Strong knowledge of drainage design standards, guidelines, and processes.
路Experience using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
路Ability to manage multiple projects of varying scales simultaneously.
路Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging professionally with clients, contractors, and design teams.
路Strong writing skills, with experience preparing Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs), Drainage Strategies, and technical reports.
路Understanding of multi-disciplinary projects from planning through to completion.
路Chartered or working towards chartership (preferred but not essential).

Technical Experience

路Expertise in drainage design for civil engineering projects, including SuDS implementation.
路Liaising with planning authorities, Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs), statutory undertakers, and national bodies like the Environment Agency.
路Experience attending client meetings and engaging with key stakeholders.
路Preparing Section 104, 106, and 185 drainage designs and applications.
路Knowledge of DMRB, Sewerage Sector Guidance, Building Regulations, CIRIA Guidance, and Local Authority drainage standards.
路Detailed on-plot drainage design (surface and foul water) for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
路Highway drainage design expertise.
路Modelling SuDS features (e.g., ponds, basins, tanks, rain gardens, swales).
路Involvement in the tender process and construction phase, responding to contractor queries and RFIs.

Desirable Skills (Not Essential)

Candidates with additional experience in highway design would be highly valued. This includes:

路Section 278 / 38 highway designs following DMRB and Local Authority standards.
路Vehicle tracking and design of residential estate roads, commercial/industrial access points, and car parks.
路Ground modelling, earthworks design, and pavement design.
