Our client, a highly regarded London-based solicitors specialising in crime, family law and human rights have an opening Business Manager. This role will report to the Finance Director on a day-to-day basis and also reports through to the department heads. It will be managing the Revenue Controller and jointly managing the Inter partes cost team which consists of 3 billers.

The overall purpose is to provide the teams with the required management, financial information and advice to support business operations. The aim is to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of the day-to-day activities within the team to improve cash flow and profit generation and to work with the FD and Heads of departments to identify and develop future revenue and profit opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing the monthly income report including Fee Provision and WIP change for each department
  • Preparing reports for the board on a monthly basis (includes commentary and analysis)
  • Meeting with department heads to review the team’s current performance
  • Responsible for the ongoing monitoring of the key performance indicators, discussing and advising on variances with FD and management and implementing correction actions as required
  • Regular monthly reviews with F/E’s to assess WIP and slow moving WIP to improve the speed and conversion of WIP to billing,
  • Regular reviews of actual hourly rates achieved, in particular on Fixed Cost cases
  • Monitor the Lockup days (WIP & Debt) and implement ongoing processes to keep this to a minimum or levels specified by Finance
  • Ensure accurate measurement of future profit costs on every matter including settlement date and estimated cash received date to be used as part of the firms rolling 5year forecast
  • Working with HODs and team partners to ensure that work is delegated properly to the appropriate levels to ensure that the hourly charge rates are maintained against the target.
  • This ensures both delegation and an appropriate mix of suitable work is undertaken by all F/Es and partners in particular.
  • To work with the HOD, team partners and Support managers to provide the required operational infrastructure to properly support the efficient working of the team.
  • Any other reasonable duties / tasks as required by the senior management of the firm.
