Environmental Health Officer - Food Safety & Health & Safety

£40-£50/hour
An opportunity has arisen for a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner to join the Environmental Health team. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering the Council's food hygiene and standards inspection programme, investigating complaints relating to food safety and health & safety matters, and supporting a range of other public health functions.
Key Responsibilities:
The appointed officer will be required to:
- Carry out food hygiene and standards inspections in accordance with the Food Law Code of Practice.
- Investigate complaints regarding food safety, health & safety at work, accidents, and infectious disease control.
- Provide professional input on licensing and planning applications, as well as event consultations.
- Undertake appropriate enforcement action in line with the Council's enforcement policy, including serving notices and preparing cases for prosecution.
- Attend court and other hearings to provide evidence and lead on prosecutions where necessary.
- Manage a varied enforcement caseload effectively, which may include undertaking monitoring visits at unsociable hours (not on-call).
- Support colleagues within the team as required.
Person Specification:
The ideal candidate will:
- Hold a full UK driving licence, have access to their own vehicle, and possess business insurance (essential).
- Be registered as an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) and hold a suitable qualification as listed in the Food Law Code of Practice (essential).
- Have significant post-qualification experience, with the competency to inspect high-risk food businesses and enforce under the Health & Safety at Work Act and associated regulations.
- Possess a strong working knowledge of IT systems, including Microsoft Office and case management systems.
- Be able to provide, upon request, a current competency framework and evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, a customer-focused approach, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Be flexible and adaptable, with the ability to support colleagues and respond effectively to changing priorities.
Working Arrangements:
The role will be based on a hybrid working model, with a combination of home working, alongside regular site visits as required.
