Role: Grid Connections Engineer - Hydrogen Projects

Location: London, UK - 2 days office 

Salary: £70K - £85K + benefits

Client:
Our client is a leading EPC specialised in the development of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen solutions with a turnkey offer. Due to recent project success, they are now requiring a Grid Connections Engineer to lead key aspects of the interconnection process for their rapidly growing portfolio of Hydrogen projects. This person will play an essential role in securing grid capacity, coordinating with iDNOs and DNOs, selecting and managing ICP partners, and building innovative and cost-effective interconnection assets for Hydrogen production facilities. This pivotal position involves strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and oversight of technical compliance, ensuring seamless grid integration for hydrogen project initiatives. This is a full-time role requiring a blend of technical expertise and commercial/managerial skills This is a new job creation in a fast-growing, busy and friendly environment with lots of challenges.

As Grid Connections Engineer your tasks will be to:
Origination

  • Joint working with Origination Team to assess project pipeline (Grid RAG status)
  • Ongoing analysis of the network, identification of the most attractive regions for H2 projects and support in strategy development
  • Review grid connection scope, cost estimate, timing and risks for project initial feasibility stage.
  • Risk Review options/flexibility (private-wire/grid network)


Project Development

  • Undertake Grid impact assessment and Grid code compliance assessment of grid connection capacity and estimate connection costs in order to find the most commercially and technically viable grid connection configuration for H2 production projects (Industry, mobility)
  • Preparation of grid connection request, application, studies, permits
  • Provide support to the purchasing team during negotiation and tenders
  • Act as the grid connection representative for evaluating studies from consultants and work alongside land planning and permitting team with regards to requirements for substations, transfer stations and cable routes
  • Manage and oversee the interface of with Distribution and Transmission system operators during the project development phase. (DNOs, NESO, NGET, Ofgem)
  • Ensure that Cost Estimate, Budget Quote and Connection Agreements are received/executed timeously.
  • Develop, review and provide inputs to tender and contract technical specifications to ensure that grid connection and electrical items are adequately covered, and risks mitigated.


Construction (FID to CoD)

  • Ensure readiness and compliance of substation and grid infrastructure.
  • Advise construction teams to achieve timely grid connection milestones.
  • Oversee certification processes and smooth handover to the Hynamics O&M team.
  • As these tasks are not exhaustive, the assistant position will evolve according to the needs of managers and the company.


Requirements
Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in industrial engineering, electrical engineering
  • 5+ years involvement in medium to large-scale (10-50 MW) interconnections of power generation/demand projects
  • ICP project development, design and construction
  • Participation in and leading interconnection processes in the UK (e.g. National Grid, ENA)
  • Electrical Engineering or similar university degree supplemented by industry experience
  • Strong ties to key industry players, iDNOs and DNOs
  • Knowledge of market-standard construction and equipment costs
  • Renewable energy experience preferred but not required
